DAR WILLIAMS CHORDS & LYRICS: THE GREEN WORLD

PLAYING TO THE FIRMAMENT

Intro: (G)(C)(G)(C) . . . (G)(C)(G)(C)

There are (G)kids, lots of kids, who put the (Em)law inside a circle
As they (C)jump, I hope that you will up and (G)down, up and (D)down
When did (G)you cave into this (Em)role that you were cast in
When did (C)dress-up turn to fashion, throw your (G)gown up and (D)down

There's (G)always the sky, let it (C)hear what you're saying
For (G)all that you are saying(C)
And let it (Em)take you apart, to the (C)elements of praying
Til (G)we are only playing to the (C)firmament
Til (G)we are only playing to the (C)firmament (G)(C)(G)(C)

In the (G)rain, in the rain, people (Em)rush around on cold streets
Here's a (C)shell to hear their heartbeats very (G)loud, very (D)loud
Where's the (G)pain, it's only rain, it's only (Em)slowing down a work day
Only (C)singing happy birthday to a (G)crowd, very (D)loud

So (G)turn on the sky, let it (C)hear what you're saying
For (G)all that you are saying(C)
And let it (Em)take you apart, to the (C)elements of praying
Til (G)we are only playing to the (C)firmament
Til (G)we are only playing to the (C)firmament

(G)(C)(G)(C)

And when did (Em)sex get so mean, when did (C)crime get so clean
You know I (Em)just can't seem to find the (C)soul in this (D)striving
Why not (Em)play to a dream, cause the (C)world is too green
For (Am)all this bad (D)driving

(G)What's the rush, dip your (Em)brush into this twilight
There are (C)leaves upon the skylight, trace your (G)hand, trace your (D)hand
Mr. (G)Ed, he shot ahead, he shot a(Em)head inside a circle
On a (C)bad day, who would you kill, take a (G)stand, trace your (D)hand

There's (G)always the sky, let it (C)hear what you're saying
For (G)all that you are saying(C)
Let it (Em)take you apart to the (C)elements of praying
Til (G)we are only playing to the (C)firmament
Til (G)we are only playing to the (C)firmament

(G)(C)(G)(C) . . . (G)(C)(G)(C) . . . fade . . .

AND A GOD DESCENDED

There's no acoustic guitar on the recorded version of this song, but it seems to be a pretty straightforward exercise in the key of C. The verses center around a walkdown in which you'll stress the notes in bold:

C: x32010
C/B: x20010
Am: x02210
Em: 022000

Intro: (C)(G)(C)(G) . . .

(C)Step through this (C/B)trampled wall
The (Am)unhinged door be(Em)trays it all
That (F)far within our (G)faith we were all (C)waiting (G)
The (C)broken glass re(C/B)flects the haze
It (Am)shines like endless (Em)holy days
(F)Struggling to re(E)member what they're (F)celebrating

Well, a (C)God (C/B)des(Am)cended (F)
And the (C)rea(C/B)son (Am)ended (F)
His (C)life was lifted (C/B)just above the (Am)law (F)
And now we (C)have to live with (C/B)what we did
With (Am)what we (F)saw

Well, you (C)mend your clothes and (C/B)patch your roof
And (Am)slivers of God's (Em)shattered truth
Grow (F)tender as the (G)grass in clean-swept (C)yards (G)
But a (C)savior came and (C/B)told us how
The (Am)truth was all a(Em)round us now
A(F)bandon house and (E)field and gather (F)up the shards

Well, a (C)God (C/B)des(Am)cended (F)
And the (C)rea(C/B)son (Am)ended (F)
His (C)life was lifted (C/B)just above the (Am)law (F)
And now we (C)have to live with (C/B)what we did
With (Am)what we (F)saw

Well, you (Dm)build your faith with strength and duty
(Em)Build your love but there's a beauty
(Dm)Well you know the scriptures tell
There (Em)are a few shards left in hell
And (Dm)if we want a god we had to (G)follow, follow him (C)down

(C)(C/B)(Am)(F) . . . (C)(C/B)(Am)(F) . . .

(C)Pictures torn out (C/B)of their frames
And (Am)orgies where we (Em)lost our names
(F)All were gone with (G)time's real de(C)sire (G)
Well, you (C)ask how God can (C/B)curse you thus
That's (Am)not a question (Em)asked by us
We (F)burned our beds and (E)books
We fear we've (F)lost the fire

The (C)God (C/B)des(Am)cended (F)
And the (C)rea(C/B)son (Am)ended (F)
His (C)life was lifted (C/B)just above the (Am)law (F)
And now we (C)have to live with (C/B)what we did
With (Am)what we (F)saw . . . (C)

AFTER ALL

Note: The C and F chords in the song are mostly played with a fretted high G (1st string/3rd fret):

C: x32013
F: xx3213
Gsus4: x20013

Another note: The F-*-Dm progression is a walkdown on the 4th string: 3rd fret/2nd fret/open.

Intro: The intro is basically just a picked C/addG chord (x32013) alternating between a C note (5th string/third fret) and a D note (open 4th string) as your two bass anchors.

(C)Go ahead, push your luck
Find out how much love the (F)world can hold
Once upon a (*)time I (Dm)had control
And (F)reigned my (G)soul in (C)tight (Gsus4)

Well the (C)whole truth
Is like the story of a (F)wave unfurled
But I held the (*)evil (Dm)of the world
So (F)I stopped the tide
Froze it (G)up from inside

And it (C)felt like a winter machine
That you go (F)through and then
You catch your breath and (*)winter (Dm)starts again
And (F)everyone (G)else is (C)spring bound (Gsus4)

And when (C)I chose to live
There was no joy - it's just a (F)line I crossed
It wasn't worth the (*)pain my (Dm)death would cost
So (F)I was not (G)lost or (C)found (Gsus4)

And if (C)I was to sleep
I knew my family had more (F)truth to tell
And so I traveled (*)down a (Dm)whispering well
To (F)know my(G)self through (C)them (Gsus4)

Growing (C)up, my Mom had a room full of books
And hid a(F)way in there
Her father raging (*)down a (Dm)spiral stair
'Til he (F)found someone
Most (G)days his son

And (C)sometimes I think
My father, too, was a (F)refugee
I know they tried to (*)keep their (Dm)pain from me
They (F)could not (G)see what it was (C)for (Gsus4)

But now (C)I'm sleeping fine
Sometimes the truth is like a (F)second chance
I am the daughter (*)of a (Dm)great romance
And (F)they are the (G)children of the (C)war (Gsus4)

Well the (C)sun rose with so many colors
It nearly (F)broke my heart
And worked me over (*)like a (Dm)work of art
And (F)I was a (G)part of all (C)that (Gsus4)

So go (C)ahead, push your luck
Say what it is you've got to (F)say to me
We will push on in(*)to that (Dm)mystery
And it'll (F)push right back
And there are (G)worse things than that

'Cause for (C)every price
And every penance that I (F)could think of
It's better to have (*)fallen (Dm)in love
Than (F)never to have (G)fallen at (C)all (Gsus4)

'Cause when you (C)live in a world
Well it gets in to who you (F)thought you'd be
And now I laugh at (*)how the (Dm)world changed me
I (F)think life (G)chose me after (C)all (C/B)(Am)(Em)(F)(G)(C)

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MORE THAN LOVE

Capo I

Intro: (G)(A)(D) . . . (G)(A)(D) . . .

Well the (G)mountain (A)was so (D)beautiful
That this (G)guy built a (A)mall and a (D)pizza shack
Yeah he (G)built an (A)ugly (D)city because
He (G)wanted the (A)mountain to (D)love him back

Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love
When you (G)know that you (A)won't get your (D)heart in that stone
When you (G)drop your (A)tools and you (D)stand alone
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (Bm)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love

Well when (G)my love (A)felt like an(D)other addiction
I (G)held my (A)breath and I (D)packed my bags
And I (G)went to the (A)land of the (D)monastery
And the (G)sunshine (A)children and the (D)prayer flags

Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love
When you (G)feel your (A)soul go be(D)yond your skin
When you (G)know that's the (A)way that it's (D)always been
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (Bm)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love

Well, I (G)climbed a (A)mountain and I (D)thought about attachment
And I (G)thought a(A)bout the (D)Buddhist King
He (G)said, "You can (A)keep your (D)superpower
It (G)just short (A)circuits my (D)country"

Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (A)love
When you (G)question (A)what your (D)desire is for
When you (G)don't just (A)figure that you (D)just want more
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (Bm)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love

Well I (G)love the (A)way the (D)world is your garden
And you (G)plant your (A)seeds and you (D)let them grow
And you (G)take things (A)out of the (D)ground just like
You (G)take what (A)comes, but you (D)never know

Yeah, and the (G)mountain (A)is so (D)beautiful
And we (G)don't know (A)if we're any (D)good at all
And we (G)give our (A)love when we (D)think we still need it
Yeah we (G)give and (A)give and (D)fall and fall

Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love
When the (G)giving is (A)all that you (D)ever get back
Oh (G)how long (A)do you (D)love like that
Can you (G)tell me (A)oh, how to (Bm)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (Bm)love
Hey (G)what do you (A)love more than (D)love

SPRING STREET

Capo II

I'm (G)sorry that I left you
With your (Bm)questions all alone
But I (C)was too happy (D)driving
And too (Bm)angry to drive (C)home
I was (G)thinking about the easy courage
(Bm)Of my distant friends
They said (C)I could let this (D)bridge wash out
And (Bm)never make a(C)mends

Can I (D)blow this small town
(Bm)Make a big sound
(C)Like the star of a film noir postcard
(Am)Can I just forget the frames I (Bm)shared with (C)you

And I (G)can't believe what they're saying
They're (D)saying I can change my (Bm)mind
Start over on (Am7)Spring Street
I'm welcome any(D)time (Bm)(C)

Well there are (G)Spring Street storefront daisies
Floating (Bm)on their neon stems
There are (C)new shirts on the (D)clothes racks
Should I (Bm)feel like one of (C)them
I can (G)find a small apartment
Where a (Bm)struggling artist died
And pre(C)tend because I (D)pay the rent
I (Bm)know that pain in(C)side

Yeah, let's (D)watch the tour bus (Bm)stop and tell us
(C)Here's the scene of a spring green life dream
(Am)Take the best part
Write it in your (Bm)caffeine dia(C)ry

And I (G)can't believe what they're saying
They're (D)saying I can leave to(Bm)night
Start over on (Am7)Spring Street
I'm welcome any(D)time (Bm)(C)

This year (G)April had a blizzard
Just to (Bm)show she did not care
And the (C)new dead leaves
They (D)made the trees look like (Bm)children with gray (C)hair
But I'll (G)push myself up through the dirt
And (Bm)shake my petals free
I'm re(C)solved to being (D)born
And so re(Bm)signed to brave(C)ry

Yeah the (D)one who leaves this (Bm)also grieves this
(C)Too much rain on a prairie flood plain
(Am)Houses floating, love is like that
(Bm)We built on the (C)river

And (G)that's to say, yeah I'm leaving
But (D)I don't have to go (Bm)there
I don't have to go to (Am7)Spring Street
'Cause it's spring every(D)where (Bm)(C) . . . (fade)

WE LEARNED THE SEA

Open D (DADF#AD)
Capo I

I've transcribed this song Open D, since that's how Dar plays it both on the CD and in concert. It's her only song in that tuning, so if you're not familiar with open tunings, it might be a good song to start with.

However, here's a quick note about open tunings: just because a song is transcribed – or even played – in an open tuning, it doesn't mean you can't play it in standard tuning. So, with this song, for example, although I've indicated how to play the chords in Open D, you can play the very same chords in their standard fingerings (Bm = 224432, G = 320033, etc.) The song won't sound identical to the way Dar plays it, but you'll still be able to play along with the song without having to retune your guitar. Or, if the idea of having to play too many barre chords (Bm and F#m) is a bit daunting, click here for an easy version in standard tuning.

Bm: x24040
Bm/A: x04040
G: 500500
F#m: 400300
A: 700700
Bm*: 900800
D: 000000

(Bm)I am the captain and (Bm/A)I have been told
That to(G)morrow we land and my (F#m)ship has been sold
Now (G)losing this boat is (F#m)worth scarce a mention
I (G)think of the (A)crew, most of (Bm*)all the first (A)ensign
(G)For all we (F#m)learned the (Bm)sea

(Bm)Guiding a ship, it takes (Bm/A)more than your skill
It's the (G)compass inside it's the (F#m)strength of your will
The (G)first ensign watched as (F#m)tempests all tried me
I (G)sang in the (A)wind as if (Bm*)God were be(A)side me
(G)For all we (F#m)learned the (D)sea

(Bm)You take the (Bm/A)wheel one more (G)time like I (F#m)showed you
(Bm)We've reached the (Bm/A)strait once even (G)I could not (F#m)go through

(Bm)I am the captain and (Bm/A)I have been told
But (G)I am not shaken, I (F#m)am eight years old
And (G)you are still young, but (F#m)you'll understand
That the (G)stars of the (A)sea are the (Bm)same for the (A)land
And (G)we came to (F#m)learn the (Bm)sea

(Bm)(Bm/A)(G)(F#m)
(Bm)(Bm/A) . . . (G)(A)(Bm*)(A) . . . (G)(F#m) . . . (D)

I WON'T BE YOUR YOKO ONO

There doesn't seem to be a acoustic guitar on the recorded version of this song, but I've seen Dar do it in concert, and this is how she plays it.

If, for whatever reason, you feel like playing this in C, just place a capo at the second fret and play each chord one step lower, for example: (D) becomes (C), (G) becomes (F), (Bm) becomes (Am), (F#m) becomes (Em), (Mourning) Becomes (Elektra). Sorry. English Major joke.

Intro: (D)(G)(A) . . . (D)(G)(A) . . .

(D)I wonder if (G)Yoko (A)Ono
(D)Ever thought of (G)staying (A)solo
(Bm)If she thought of (F#m)other men and
(Bm)If she doubted (F#m)John (A)Lennon
(D)Worrying that (G)he'd dis(A)tract her (D)art (G)(A)

(D)Sitting in the (G)Apple (A)sessions
(D)Giving John her (G)music (A)lessons
(Bm)Challenging the (F#m)warring nations
(Bm)With her paper (F#m)instal(A)lations
(D)Did she guard her (G)Yoko (A)human (D)heart (G)(A)

(G)Well, they could (Em)talk about me
(G)Yeah, they could (Em)talk about me
(A)Throw me to the velvet dogs of (D)pop star histo(D7)ry
But (G)I won't (A)be your (F#m)Yoko Ono
If (G)you're not (A)good enough for (D)me (G)(A)

(D)Some will give their (G)love for (A)fashion
(D)Others trade their (G)gold for (A)passion
(Bm)I don't have the (F#m)goods to start with
(Bm)Never had the (F#m)reins to (A)part with
(D)Still, I hope you (G)take me (A)serious(D)ly (G)(A)

(G)'Cause I think (Em)I could go
(G)Deep as the (Em)sea of Yoko
(A)You don't know a person like me
(D)I could sell your (D7)songs to Nike
(G)And for all you (A)know
I could (F#m)save your soul
As (G)only true (Bm)love can change your (G)mind
Make you (Em)leave your screaming (G)fans be(A)hind

(D)When John called the (G)wind an (A)opera
(D)Making love with (G)every (A)chakra
(Bm)When he said her (F#m)voice would carry
And (Bm)when he whispered (F#m)old Chuck (A)Berry
(D)Only then would (G)Yoko (A)set him (D)free (G)(A)

(D)Fame will come and (G)vanish (A)later
(D)Transcendental (G)love is (A)greater
(Bm)I think if we (F#m)had this somehow
(Bm)We'd be feeling (F#m)famous (A)right now
(D)We'd be saying (G)love is (A)all you (D)need (G)(A)

(G)And they could (Em)rag about me
(G)Yeah, they could (Em)rag about me
(A)Throw me to the velvet dogs of (D)pop star histo(D7)ry
But (G)I won't (A)be your (F#m)Yoko Ono
If (G)you're not (A)good enough for (Bm)me

Oh, no . . . and (G)I won't (A)be your (F#m)Yoko Ono
If (G)you're not (A)good enough for (D)me (G)(A) . . . (D)(G)(A) . . . (D)

CALLING THE MOON

Capo I

Dar does this song somewhat differently than Richard Shindell's version on Somewhere Near Paterson, which he actually did first, although it's her song. Now wait just a minute . . . is it a cover song if you do it first? I don't know . . . I guess it's that old rule that the first version you hear of a song tends to become the "definitive" version in your mind. In any case, I like his version somewhat better; it's sparser, plus, it's in DADGAD. You can find the chords on my Richard Shindell page. Dar's version is pretty terrific, though.

Intro: (D)(G) . . . (D)(G)

The (D)moon wanted more of my (G)night
I (D)turned off the engine and the (G)headlights(G/F#)
The (Em)trees appeared as they'd (A)never been gone
I (Em)promised the fields I'd re(A)turn from now on
And the (D)moon kept on (G)rising(G/F#)
I had (Em)no more to say
I put my (A)roadmaps away
And sur(D)rendered the day

(G)And I know you'll be (A)calling me soon
And (D)if I don't answer I'm (Bm)calling the (G)moon
Calling the (Em)moon
I was (A)calling her then
I'm (D)wondering (D/C#)will she (Bm)take me again
(G)Oh, (A)I am calling the (D)moon

When I called the moon back to (G)me
I (D)thought she wanted my (G)beau(G/F#)ty
I (Em)shone in the best that (A)vanity buys
I (Em)covered the path where my (A)life turned to lies
And the (D)moon kept on (G)rising(G/F#)
But I felt (Em)nothing at all
She comes when the (A)empire falls
And shines on (D)crumbling walls

Calling the (G)moon
By the (A)name that she chose
As (D)Tennessee (D/C#)wandered in (Bm)moth-eaten robes
(G)Oh, (A)I am calling the (D)moon
Calling the (G)moon (A)(D)(D/C#)(Bm)
(G)Oh(A) I'm calling the (D)moon

Oh, make sense of me, (G)night
I can (D)see so much from this (G)cold (G/F#)height
The (Em)moon said oh darkness my (A)work is done
I've (Em)poured this bottle of (A)light from the sun
But their (D)anger keeps on (G)rising(G/F#)
And they (Em)don't understand
I've shown them (A)all that I can
That the (D)world is at hand

(G)And I know they'll be (A)calling me soon
And (D)if I don't answer I'm (Bm)only the (G)moon
I can (A)see by her light
This (D)one's going (D/C#)out to the (Bm)moon tonight
(G)Oh, (A)I am calling the (D)moon

Calling the (G) moon
'Cause I (A)know what it's worth
To (D)tug at the (D/C#)seas and il(Bm)lumine the earth
(G)Oh, (A)I am calling the (Bm)moon (G)
(Em)Oh, (A)I am calling the (D)moon

IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY

Capo III

(F)(G)(C) . . . (F)(G)(C)

The first part of (F)every (G)day for me is (C)good
I've got the (F)bus stop (G)in my neighbor(C)hood
And everything's on (Em)purpose (F)everywhere they (C)go
Hiding in my (Em)car and (F)running in the (G)snow

Running (C)with the (C/B)friends they'll (Am)know for (Am/G)years
I've (F)seen it (G)all from (C)here, from here

It happens every (G)day, be(F)fore they go to (C)school
They play until the (G)bus drives (F)up beside my (C)lawn
And there's always been a (G)mother who (F)waits 'til they are (C)gone
Then she (C/B)turns a(Am)way
It happens every (Em)day (F)(G)(C)

Noon comes and (F)turns this (G)campus upside (C)down
I watch the (F)students (G)in this college (C)town
You would think they're (Em)carefree, (F)I have seen their (C)trials
Frowning into (Em)Shakespeare and (F)practicing their (G)smiles

Even (C)under(C/B)lining (Am)Nabo(Am/G)kov
When (F)I am (G)not in (C)love, in love

It happens every (G)day with their (F)journals in ca(C)fes
Looking up at their re(G)flection (F)on the other (C)wall
With every new i(G)dea wondering (F)if they've changed at (C)all
And then they (C/B)look a(Am)way
It happens every (Em)day (F)(G)(C)

Well life is as (F)hard and as (G)easy as they (C)say
Walking the (F)steps we've (G)chosen on this (C)day
Some will be out(Em)rageous, (F)some have rarely (C)shown
Some will walk in (Em)couples, (F)some will walk (G)alone

As I (C)think a(C/B)bout the (Am)world I (Am/G)see
They (F)stare and (G)smile at (C)me, at me

It happens every (G)day at the (F)crossing of the (C)street
Walking out to see what's (G)new and (F)what is just the (C)same
And the only word for (G)love is (F)everybody's (C)name
And that will (C/B)always (Am)stay
It happens every (Em)day
And (F)every day will (G)happen without (Am)you

ANOTHER MYSTERY

The coolest thing about this boppy, simple-to-play song is the double modulation: when she slinks up to the "A" section after the second chorus, then back down to "G" for the last chorus. A little jarring, yes, but interestingly different and refreshing.

Capo II

Intro: (G)(Em) . . . (G)(Em)

Get off your (G)cat walk, I want you (Em)to talk
To be the (G)seer in(Em)stead of the seen
There is a (G)flower, a leaning (Em)tower
And (C)all of the wonders (D)standing between

I don't (G)want to be another (Em)mystery oh (C)no (D)
I don't (G)want to see who's (Em)looking at me oh (C)no (D)
I want to (G)be the one to (Em)feel the sun oh (C)oh (D)
So if you (G)want to see the (Em)world with me let's (C)go (D)

(G)(Em) . . . (G)(Em)

The alli(G)gator, the god that (Em)made her
And all the (G)creatures that got (Em)left behind
In Mycn(G)nae, Ave Ma(Em)ria
And (C)everything you gotta dig (D)harder to find
I don't (C)want to be a vapor of (D)heavenly light
(C)Everybody guess if I'm an (D)angel or sprite

I don't (G)want to be another (Em)mystery oh (C)no (D)
I don't (G)want to see who's (Em)looking at me oh (C)no (D)
I want to (G)be the one to (Em)feel the sun oh (C)oh (D)
So if you (G)want to see the (Em)world with me let's (C)go (D)

(A)(F#m) . . . (A)(F#m)

You could (A)pursue it, hell I could (F#m)do it
I'll just be (A)quiet when I get (F#m)angry and hurt
I'm stopping (A)traffic, cinema(F#m)graphic
With my (D)long black coat hanging (E)down in the dirt
And my (D)hair clinging to my (E)face in the rain
Like a (D)goddess from the cult of (E)beautiful pain

I don't (A)want to be another (F#m)mystery (D)(E)
I don't (A)want to be another (F#m)mystery (D)(E)

I could (D)cut you off with a (E)shoulder of stone
(D)Smoke all night and leave the (E)party alone
(D)Screw myself with an in(E)scrutable pout
But I (D)just want you to come (E)figure me out

I don't (G)want to be another (Em)mystery oh (C)no (D)
I don't (G)want to see who's (Em)looking at me oh (C)no (D)
I want to (G)be the one to (Em)feel the sun oh (C)oh (D)
So if you (G)want to see the (Em)world with me let's (C)go (D)

I don't (G)want to be another (Em)mystery (C)(D) . . . (F)(C)(G)

O CANADA GIRLS

Capo IV

Cadd9: x30010

(Cadd9)If I did not dream who would you be
And if you did not dream who would I be
(G)Yes there is gold (D)in this mountain
(G)This they cannot (D)mine
(C)Tell me who they (Am)need it for
I'll (C)tell you now, they need me more

O (Em)Canada girls
I have (D)seen you (Am)in your (Em)sweaters
In the (D)late night (Am)sun at (Em)Winnipeg
Growing (D)up with (Am)friends and so un(Em)hurried
With your(D) secrets I believe
Kept in the longer sleeve
Oh (Em)girls (D)(Em)(D)

(G)Highways seen from (D)hotel windows
(G)Pumping highway (D)blood
(C)If I say they (Am)run from fear
Are (C)things much different standing here

O (Em)Canada girls
When I (D)saw the (Am)geese flying(Em) north
I re(D)membered the (Am)friends of my (Em)vision
And a (D)sense I (Am)had of (Em)other wings
Like (D)faith, light threaded through a psalm
Like our boys fleeing Vietnam
Oh (Em)girls (D)(Em)(D)

(G)If I drove up (D)87
(G)Up past Montre(D)al
(C)Following the (Am)bluest veins
(C)Following through icy rains
Would (Am)I emerge in the (D)present
And (Am)know just where to be(D)gin
I'm so(Am) sick of forgetting my(D)self to remember who I (Em)am
And (C)you say yeah, but why so (D)cold, and so Canadi(Em)an
(C)I guess it's got to (D)feel like some exodus
And (C)if I succeed, well (D)there will be more of us
And (C)if I don't well I don't really (D)know

(Em)Girls
Who have (D)found our (Am)unsung (Em)nation
Where we (D)left so much (Am)land to it(Em)self
That (D)everyone (Am)had her own (Em)mountain

Well if you (D)think of this girl and the dreams that made her
(Cadd9)Write your secrets on hornet nest paper
And blow it hi(D)gh across the (G)border (D)

Cause (Cadd9)if you did not dream, who would I be
And if I did not dream who would you be
